Over 60,000 homes and businesses across south-west Dorset will benefit from an upgraded electricity infrastructure with greater resilience, capacity and flexibility, thanks to a multi-million-pound project by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN).
The £20 million upgrade of Chickerell substation, located near Weymouth, starts this month; replacing and upgrading equipment that has been in operation since the 1960s. This modern and more efficient technology is designed to support the delivery of cleaner, greener electricity and unlock additional capacity across the region.
Working within the footprint of the existing substation, SSEN’s contract partner Aureos will install new switchgear, replace key electrical components, and construct an elevated indoor switch-house to protect vital infrastructure from salt corrosion.
Running through to mid-2028, the project will significantly improve operational safety and increase the substation’s capacity to meet future demand, including supporting the growing number of customers generating their own electricity in areas such as Portland, Weymouth, Dorchester, and Cerne Abbas.
Kris Haskins, Project Manager at SSEN says:
“Chickerell substation plays a crucial role in south-west Dorset’s electricity network, serving as a key gateway for delivering power to over 60,000 customers.
“With much of the equipment dating back to the post-war era, this upgrade is a timely and essential step in modernising our infrastructure to meet the region’s growing energy demands, particularly as we transition to low-carbon technologies.”
Kris continued:
“Most of the work will take place within the substation itself, so we expect minimal disruption to the local community. However, those near the substation may notice an increase in construction traffic to and from the site. We’re committed to keeping the community informed throughout the project through our website and regular communications.”
SSEN’s Project Director, David Grant adds:
“We’re excited to launch this project at Chickerell Substation as part of a significant investment programme in SSEN’s Dorset electricity network.
“By upgrading our substations and network, we’re enabling the capture of more green energy and delivering a secure, flexible, and resilient power supply that will support local communities and economic growth for years to come.”
This project forms part of SSEN’s broader programme to modernise and strengthen the electricity network across the region. It is one of several planned upgrades designed to support the transition to low-carbon technologies such as electric vehicles, solar panels, and heat pumps.
