Andy, who joined SSEN last month, officially takes up his role this week and will report to SSEN Distribution’s Managing Director, Chris Burchell. Andy will play an integral role in the Distribution leadership team and will be responsible for the network operations, maintenance and investment delivery for SSEN’s northern distribution network area, which serves over 780,000 homes and businesses.

With over 25 years’ experience across the telecommunications, electricity and utilities sectors, Andy joined SSEN from Balfour Beatty where he most recently held the position of Operations Director, responsible for the delivery of power transmission, distribution and water infrastructure projects across the UK. A mechanical engineering graduate and chartered project professional, Andy brings significant experience of managing key infrastructure projects on behalf of SSEN.

Andy succeeds Mark Rough who will retire from SSEN later this summer after 37 years’ service with the SSE group.

Chris Burchell, Managing Director of SSEN Distribution, said:
“We are delighted to welcome Andy to SSEN Distribution in a key leadership role for our organisation. Andy joins us at a critical time for the company and the industry as we embark upon the RIIO-ED2 price control period. His extensive experience and insight in the utilities and contracting sectors will be vital as we look to modernise, drive operational excellence and maximise opportunities to enhance the service we provide for our customers. Andy joins a team with strong foundations led most recently by Mark Rough. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Mark for the significant contribution he’s made both to Distribution and the wider SSE business in 37 years of service with the company.”
Andy Smith, Director of Operations (North), added:
“I am delighted to be joining SSEN at such an exciting time for the company and our industry. Distribution is at the heart of making net zero happen for our customers and it is that sense of purpose that drives me and everyone in our business each day. In RIIO-ED2, we have committed to an ambitious programme of work to deliver a smarter, more resilient network, delivering benefits for our customers during and beyond the next five years. I am looking forward to working with my team to make our plans a reality across our north of Scotland licence area.”
