Powering Progress in Southampton

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) is investing over £155 million to upgrade Southampton’s electricity network, supporting the city’s transition to a low-carbon future.

Our work in the city

Southampton has bold ambitions for a cleaner, low-carbon future – and our investment in the city’ s electricity infrastructure will help deliver the capacity and resilience to power homes, businesses and public services long into
the future.

Working with our delivery partner, Clancy, this critical investment will boost Southampton’s network capacity, resilience, and flexibility to support the city’s economic growth, energy needs, and transition to a low-carbon future.

The distribution network plays a vital role in delivering electricity from substations to homes, businesses, and public services. It also enables the integration of renewable energy technologies, helping to build a cleaner, greener
energy system.

Running until 2031, our work will strengthen local infrastructure and futureproof the power supply for homes, businesses, and essential services across Southampton.

Our programme in Southampton will help:

  • Improve long-term reliability of power supplies
  • Support the transition to a low-carbon future
  • Enable the uptake of electric vehicles, solar panels and heat pump
  • Create skilled jobs and training opportunities in the region
  • Enhance capacity to accommodate future growt

Working with the communities

Working together goes beyond infrastructure. SSEN and Clancy are committed to leaving a positive legacy by supporting the communities. Through collaboration, investment, and local engagement, we aim to deliver long-term social value alongside a stronger electricity network. We are:

  • Supporting local jobs and skills development
  • Offering apprenticeships and training opportunities
  • Delivering STEM workshops and school visits
  • Volunteering with local initiatives
  • Partnering with community groups and charities
  • Contributing to local projects and events

Building connections in the community

As part of our work in Southampton, Clancy were invited in May to take part in a special commemorative weekend at Gurdwara Tegh Bahadar Sahib. The event marked the legacy of Guru Arjan Dev Ji.

Around 15 members of our team, currently working nearby on Derby Road, joined the congregation and were given a guided tour to learn more about Sikh beliefs and traditions.

Ash Taylor, Construction Manager at Clancy said:

“It was an honour for our team to be welcomed so warmly. Sharing Langar and learning more about the Sikh community gave us a memorable experience and a deeper appreciation of the people we are working
alongside in Southampton.”

Working with communities

Our approach goes beyond just delivering essential infrastructure. SSEN and Clancy are working hand in hand with the communities we serve to create a positive social impact and leave a meaningful legacy for future generations through:

• Employment opportunities
• Skills training and apprenticeships
• Educational outreach
• Volunteering days
• Collaborating with local charities, organisations and community groups
