We remain at Yellow Alert status in the north of Scotland ahead of Storm Floris, which is highly likely to cause disruption on Monday.
This heightened alert level reflects the strong likelihood that Monday’s storm-force winds will affect customers’ power supplies. Over the past few days we’ve been increasing our level of preparedness, and we're ready to respond.
💨 The weather forecast
Storm-force winds are forecast for much of our north of Scotland network area from early on Monday. These winds will be strong and sustained. A deep area of low pressure will slowly move across much of Scotland for most of the day. Argyll, the Highlands, the Western Isles, Perthshire, Angus, Moray and Aberdeenshire are likely to face the strongest winds.
Gusts in exposed areas of 90mph are possible, and these projections have increased in speed over the weekend.
The Met Office has now upgraded its own weather warnings; an Amber Weather Warning for Wind is now in place from 1000 to 2200 on Monday for most of Scotland, and lesser Yellow Wind Warnings for the whole of the country remain in place from 0600 on Monday.
👷 How we’re responding
Storms of this severity at the height of summer are relatively rare. In response to this deteriorating forecast, we’ve already activated our well-rehearsed contingency plans. This means we’ve brought in hundreds of extra team members. They'll be ready to carry out network repairs as soon as it's safe to do so. We’ve also postponed planned network maintenance to free up further resources.
We’ve increased the number of people who'll be on duty in our customer contact centres; they’ll be ready to answer your calls and respond to your queries on social media. In advance of this severe weather arriving, we've sent information via text message to more than 100,000 of our more vulnerable customers to provide them with guidance on what preparations to make, along with help and advice on what they can do if the power goes off.
In addition to this, during Sunday we're directly telephoning the most vulnerable among this group in the areas predicted to be affected.
We’ll continue to monitor this period of severe weather closely and will issue further updates.
