Stephen Morgan the MP for Portsmouth South is encouraging constituents who may need extra support during a power cut to register for Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks' (SSEN) free Priority Services Register.

For some, being without electricity, even for a short time, can be a distressing and difficult situation, particularly for those relying on specialist electrical medical equipment, such as a kidney dialysis machine or ventilator. That's why SSEN, who is responsible for keeping the lights on in the north of Scotland, offers extra help and support to ensure its customers are looked after.

Stephen is calling on members of his constituency to contact SSEN if they feel they, or someone they know including family members or neighbours, may need extra support as we approach the winter months.

Stephen, said: "As we approach February, forecasts show that wintry weather remains with us. I urge my constituents to look out for their neighbours, friends and family members, particularly those who are dependent on electricity for home medical care, have an illness, are elderly, or have very young children in their household."

"Any of my constituents who feel they may need extra help, can access this through registering on the Priority Services Register, for free. This provides extra help to those who need it most during adverse weather conditions."

Constituents can qualify for SSEN's Priority Services Register if they:

  • Are dependent on electricity for home medical care
  • Have a chronic illness or short term medical condition
  • Are disabled
  • Have special communication needs
  • Have children under the age of five
  • Are over the age of 60

By registering for SSEN's PSR, customers will be proactively contacted to warn them of potential bad weather to help them prepare and to offer extra support where required.SSEN's teams will also keep in close and regular contact with its PSR customers during network outages to check they are getting the help they need. The free service also offers:

  • Dedicated 24 hour priority services phone number
  • Information in the format you need, for example Braille, textphone, audio CD or foreign language
