Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) is urging everyone celebrating Guy Fawkes Night to be aware of its overhead equipment and to avoid letting off rockets and building bonfires near power lines.
Ian Crawley, the company's Safety, Health and Environment Manager, explains more: "We want everyone to enjoy this special time of year. Fireworks and Guy Fawkes are a traditional autumn activity and we are keen to help make it a safe and enjoyable one. When you're planning your bonfire and fireworks, please do so in the daylight so you can get a good idea of what is in the immediate vicinity, both on the ground and overhead. Always avoid building your bonfires close to our equipment or under our overhead lines."
"Remember, fireworks these days can travel a tremendous distance, and if you're not careful they could easily end up striking one of our overhead lines or landing in a substation. Not only could this damage our equipment and cause the power to go out in your local community, stray fireworks can also cause serious injuries to spectators and passers-by."
Anyone coming across damage to SSEN equipment, or who needs to report a power cut is urged to call 105, the new national electricity emergency number.
