We're further enhancing our presence in Flexibility Service Markets with the launch of a new long-term flexibility auction on Monday 12 January 2026.

We've already procured more than 934 MW of flexibility during the first half of the current ED2 price control period. Now, a further 46 MW is being sought from this forthcoming auction. This long-term market window will be open from 12 to 26 January 2026 and will seek to cover requirements in 101 different areas across both our north and south network areas.

Flexibility explained

Flexibility is the ability to shift the timing and location of both the consumption and generation of electricity. As more low carbon technologies - such as electric vehicles, solar panels, heat pumps, and battery storage - connect to the grid, flexibility plays an essential role in managing constraints on the network and supporting the smart-grid technologies that are an important part of decarbonising communities and the economy.

Paul Fitzgerald, Flexibility Manager at SSEN Distribution, says:

“SSEN takes an efficient, and targeted approach to its procurement of Flexibility Services. Our effective Distribution Network Options Assessments give us vital information about where we need flexibility, so can work to secure it effectively.

“Flexibility Services are a key part of our overall network plans, and we look forward to receiving applications from interested parties in this forthcoming round. By getting involved in this way, they’ll be supporting our wider efforts to decarbonise communities, and create the conditions for further, sustainable economic growth, as well as generating their own income stream.”
