More than 550 children from the Hampshire area have been introduced to the worlds of engineering and construction at a special event held at the Civil Engineering Training Centre in Fareham.

The two-day i-Construct careers fair welcomed hundreds of pupils from years 7 to 10. A team from our Large Capital Delivery division – which is driving massive investment to improve the south of England’s electricity network – were on hand to lend their expertise and insights at the event.

The children who attended took part in a range of activities to build their understanding of the construction industry. They played out a fictitious scenario which involved building a nightingale hospital near Southampton, including a new substation to power it.

Students interviewed our colleagues and used the information given to deliver presentations. These were nominated for an award, which SSEN sponsored. The event also included plant demonstrations, civil engineering tasks, and a variety of stands from businesses, including an stand dedicated to women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers.

A selection of the free items, including leaflets and stickers, handed out to those to attended the careers event

Aaron Reed, Senior Project Manager at SSEN Distribution, says:

"It was a pleasure to once again support the i-Construct event. It offers a fantastic platform for inspiring young people by showing them the exciting opportunities available within the electrical and construction industries. Events like this are vital in encouraging pupils to consider careers that contribute directly to building a sustainable and resilient energy future, something we’re deeply committed to at SSEN Distribution.

"We recognise that the future of our industry depends on the next generation of skilled, passionate individuals. That’s why we continue to invest in talent development through our leading apprenticeship and graduate programmes, which provide hands-on experience and clear pathways into rewarding careers in the energy sector.”

Our team members who took part in this event did so through our group-wide volunteering programme, Be the Difference, which encourages all colleagues to take part in volunteering for a cause close to their hearts.
