The event aimed to raise aspirations and spark curiosity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers among local school children aged 10 to 14. Through a series of interactive workshops and inspiring talks, pupils had the opportunity to engage directly with professionals from a wide range of STEM industries.

Representatives from SSEN, Clancy, OCU, Aureos, PTC Contactors, Rowfields Commercial, DACI, Meeting Place, Briggs Marine, and Solent University were on hand to share insights answer questions about careers in power and infrastructure, construction, science, and innovation. From designing overhead power networks and constructing bug hotels, to laying subsea electricity cables in a paddling pool, students took part in a diverse range of hands-on workshops that challenged their creativity and allowed them to apply STEM skills in fun, practical ways.

The event was sponsored by our Large Capital Delivery (LCD) team, which is investing over £155 million to upgrade Southampton’s electricity distribution network. Along with contract partners, Clancy we're working to deliver an energy infrastructure for the city that is resilient, flexible, and future-ready.

Ian Burnham, our Head of Large Capital Delivery for the Central Southern England region said:
“Events like this are more than just educational; they’re about opening doors, breaking down barriers, and showing students that a future in science, technology, engineering or mathematics is within their reach.

“We’re incredibly proud to partner with SmartSTEMs and Solent University to help nurture the next generation of innovators, while also strengthening our connection our local communities.”
Karen Adams, Head of Operations at SmartSTEMs added:
“At SmartSTEMs, we’re all about showing young people that STEM is exciting, creative and something they can be part of. Events like this are so important because they let pupils get stuck in, try something new and see real people working in STEM jobs.

“When they meet role models they can relate to, it helps them picture a future they might not have thought was possible and that is where the spark starts.”
