Across Thames Valley, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) has colleagues working to keep the power flowing to vital services, such as hospitals and NHS departments, as well as nearly one million customers, some of whom will be isolating at home.

A safe and reliable power supply is essential and SSEN staff are working hard to ensure the continued delivery of services to homes and businesses while adhering to the Government guidelines on social distancing.

While SSEN's linesmen are on the frontline every day, they need a strong team behind them to make sure that the PPE and electrical equipment they need to carry out their role is available.

Simon Yorke and Gary Cook work in the SSEN's Thames Valley stores, providing a vital link and service to their colleagues in the field.

Simon explains more: "Gary and I are among a small number of colleagues who are allowed to work from our Thames Valley depot, as the job we do is classed as essential and we are able to carry out that role while sticking to the strict guidelines on social distancing.

"We work in stores, ensuring our teams in the field - working to keep our customers' power flowing - have everything they need to carry out and complete their jobs, from basic tools to more complicated items of kit specific to our power network.

"Providing Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) to our staff is something we are used to doing but normally these kits consist of hard hats, boots, high visibility and protective clothing, but the term PPE has taken on a different meaning now.

"In the past two months, our stores team here in Thames Valley has provided our frontline colleagues with the equivalent of eight years' worth of hand sanitiser and eleven years' worth of antibacterial wipes, ensuring that our staff are able to keep themselves and our customers safe."
