Oxford West and Abingdon MP Layla Moran is encouraging constituents who may need extra support during a power cut to register for Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks' (SSEN) free Priority Services Register.
For some, being without electricity, even for a short time, can be a distressing and difficult situation. Particularly for those relying on specialist electrical medical equipment, such as a kidney dialysis machine or ventilator. SSEN, who are responsible for keeping the lights on in the north of Scotland, have offered extra help and support to ensure its customers are looked after. Layla is calling on members of her constituency to contact SSEN if they feel they, or someone they know, may need extra support during the winter months, to register for the free scheme.
Commenting on the scheme Oxfordshire MP Layla Moran said: "We all know how tough winter can be for the most vulnerable in our society. We should always be looking out for our neighbours, friends and family members, especially at this time of year. Those dependent on electricity for home medical care, are elderly or have very young children need all the support they need."
"I urge local residents who feel like they may need extra help to register for this free scheme that can offer help for those most at risk in the event of a power cut. This time of year, with bad weather likely around the corner I want to make sure residents have as much support as possible."
Constituents can qualify for SSEN's Priority Services Register if they:
- Are dependent on electricity for home medical care
- Have a chronic illness or short term medical condition
- Are disabled
- Have special communication needs
- Have children under the age of five
- Are over the age of 60
By registering for SSEN's PSR, customers will be proactively contacted to warn them of potential bad weather to help them prepare and to offer extra support where required.SSEN's teams will also keep in close and regular contact with its PSR customers during network outages to check they are getting the help they need. The free service also offers:
- Dedicated 24 hour priority services phone number
- Information in the format you need, for example Braille, textphone, audio CD or foreign language
