Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) has completed marine surveys on submarine electricity cables in Orkney ahead of its applications to Marine Scotland to replace them.
The surveys follow on from recent consultation events hosted by SSEN to gather feedback and understand people's views on the installation designs and methods proposed for the following submarine electricity cable routes:
- Mainland Orkney to Shapinsay;
- Rousay to Westray; and
- Shapinsay to Stronsay.
In order to gather more detailed information about the seabed habitats where the new cables will be laid, a vessel, The Challenger, has been used to carry out non-intrusive drop down video and stills image surveys. Data collected will identify sensitive areas and will better inform the proposed cable routes.
Kirstine Wood, Lead Engagement and Submarine Policy Manager said: "As these submarine cables come to the end of their operational life, we need to make arrangements to replace them to ensure a reliable electricity supply in Orkney.
"As a responsible developer, we are gathering as much information as possible to ensure the routes proposed are safe and have minimal impact on sensitive species and other marine users."
"Once the routes are defined, applications will be made to Marine Scotland for permission to lay the new cables. Interested parties will have the opportunity again to comment on the proposals at this point."
Orkney-based Xodus Group was contracted by SSEN to undertake the survey works the works were supported by Orkney based Sula Diving and Envision Wherever possible, SSEN ensures that communities in the local areas where it is working are able to share in and benefit directly from its investment.
