A quick look back at May reveals that the UK experienced the second warmest May since records began in 1910. The temperature anomaly map shows most of Europe was warmer than the 30 year average, notably in Spain. A new record solar generation of 8.73 gigawatts for the UK was recorded on 26 May.
The first week of June has seen some torrential rain and strong and gusty winds. Walking through the park on the way to work this morning the ground was covered in twigs, small branches and leaves from the overnight weather conditions. This unsettled spell of weather looks set to continue to about 12 June as further areas of low pressure come in from the nearby Atlantic Ocean. More wet and windy periods of weather are expected, interspersed with brighter, warmer but still showery days.
For the week commencing 12 June, the map shows the typical weather pattern we're expecting. The weather should be better than the first part of the month, with a breeze from the Atlantic, high pressure occasionally extending up from the Azores and low pressure sometimes brushing past the far north of the country. Over mainland Europe, temperatures are likely to be above average for the time of year, especially for inland Spain and parts of SE France and Italy. Some cool and unsettled interludes with below average temperature and sunshine are possible for western Scotland and Ireland, being closer to the Atlantic low pressure systems.
The next change is expected during the last days of June, when we could see spells of high pressure settling over the UK, bringing weather more typical of summer.
So overall, the weather patterns should improve during the month, overall we're expecting above average wind speeds and rainfall for the UK & Ireland, with near average temperatures and slightly below average sunshine levels.
