  • Heat Strategy

The UK and Scottish Governments have set ambitious targets to rapidly increase heat pump and zero-emission heating system installations in the coming decade. SSEN is committed to ensuring this transition is managed in a fair manner for the households, businesses and communities it serves.

  • As a Distribution Network Operator (DNO), SSEN’s responsibility is to ensure a safe, secure and reliable supply of electricity. In the transition to net zero this means investing in our network and investigating smart solutions to accommodate the extensive electrification required to meet the UK’s decarbonisation targets.

SSEN has launched a consultation on its Heat Strategy Proposal to empower stakeholders to shape its approach to heat decarbonisation. The consultation will remain open until 30 April 2021:

There remains a significant amount of uncertainty around how the UK’s ambitious heat decarbonisation targets will be met. We have launched our consultation to gather stakeholder feedback on the principles we embed, the actions we will take, and our approach to supporting a fair transition. SSEN’s proposed Heat Strategy principles are:

  • Interested in installing a heat pump?

We recommend speaking to an electrician or installer to see if your home wiring is sufficient to support an electric vehicle charger or a ground source heat pump, or if you need to apply for an upgrade or new connection.

Your installer should have completed an Adequacy of Supply Assessment. If your supply is adequate for the charging point, your installer can notify us of the installation by downloading the below form and returning it to connections@ssen.co.uk

    Working in collaboration

The ENA have developed the application forms that SSEN and other DNOs use when connecting electric vehicles and heat pumps. More information can be found on ENA’s website under the heading “Connecting electric vehicles and heat pumps”. This supports the safe delivery of connections, and operation of the energy networks by ensuring connections are compliant with the technical and legal requirements in the UK

  • We will publish an updated strategy following a review of the feedback we receive to ensure our Heat Strategy reflects the views of our stakeholders.
