Project Overview

The current subsea cable linking Coll and Tiree has been in operation for several decades and is approaching the end of its operational life. Routine inspections have identified the need for the cable replacement to maintain network security and reliability for local residents and businesses on both islands.

Project Details

· Cable route: The new cable will follow the existing route between the established landfall positions on Coll and Tiree, minimising environmental impact and making use of existing pathways.

· Technical specification: The replacement involves installing a new 33 kilovolt (kV) rated submarine cable designed to meet current and future electricity demand, ensuring a robust and resilient power supply.

· Installation Process: Our subsea cables team, in collaboration with specialist contractors, will oversee the installation process. This includes the careful planning and execution of each phase of the project to ensure safety and environmental compliance.

Community Engagement

We are committed to engaging with the local communities on Coll and Tiree throughout the project. We encourage residents and stakeholders to stay informed about the project’s progress by hosting drop-in events to allow people to ask question or express concerns and providing regular updates to key community stakeholders including Coll Community Council and Tiree Community Council.

We hosted initial community drop-on events in October 2023 to discuss the project and gather feedback from the community. The next events will take place:

· Wednesday 7 May, 10.00 am – 3.00 pm An Cridhe, Main Street, Isle of Coll PA78 6SY.

· Wednesday 14 May, 10.00 am – 3.00 pm An Talla, Isle of Tiree PA77 6UP

Environmental Considerations

Environmental stewardship is a priority of SSEN. Replacement of the subsea cable has involved comprehensive environmental assessment and adherence at the best practices to minimise ecological impact in both the land and marine environment.

This includes careful route planning, utilising existing pathways and implementing measures to protect marine and coastal habitats. We also work closely with key stakeholders including Nature Scot, Marine Scotland and the Scottish Fisherman’s Federation, seeking expert input as required.

Benefits to the Community

Replacing the subsea cable between Coll and Tiree will:

· Provide a stable and secure electricity supply to residents and businesses.

· Accommodate future increases in electrical demand, supporting local development.

· Utilise modern, efficient technology to reduce environmental impact and improve energy efficiency.

Stay informed

This subsea cable replacements underscores our dedication to maintaining and improving the electricity network infrastructure, ensuring that island communities like Coll and Tiree receive the reliable service they depend on.
