Work to replace the 33kV submarine electricity cable from Bay of Crook in Shapinsay to Bay of Holland in Stronsay cable was completed in June 2018.The cable was identified as nearing the end of its operational life and an engineering solution was proposed and consulted on between 2016 and 2018. However, whilst surveys and feasibility studies were being completed, the cable faulted in May 2018 leaving some 970 customers temporarily without power, although supplies were restored the same day. The team applied for an emergency marine licence to allow a replacement cable to be installed. By working closely with Marine Scotland and other consultees all licences were granted, and a new cable was in the water in within 6 weeks after the fault was first reported.
