  • Yell-Unst 1 & 2 Cable Replacements

  • Project overview

Following submission of an application in April 2018, Marine Scotland has granted a licence to replace two submarine electricity cables from Yell to Unst in the Shetland Islands.

The two 33kV cables will be installed close to the existing cable routes at Point of Grimsetter on Yell to Ness of Wadbister across the stretch of water known as Bluemull Sound.

Installation works are scheduled to start in early 2019 and when completed will secure the power supply to the island for years to come.

    The works

As the seabed is rocky with little overlying sediment, both cables will be surface laid on the seabed across the length of the route. Due to strong tidal currents, we plan to lay rock bags or concrete mattresses at spot locations on the cable to pin it to the seabed. By doing this, movement of the cable is reduced and its impact on the seabed is minimised.
